Independent Living Services (ILS) at Milestones

Milestones is excited to announce we are now providing Independent Living Services (ILS)! Our program empowers adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including those with autism, to live fulfilling and independent lives within their communities.

What are Independent Living Services (ILS)?

Independent Living Services (ILS) are individualized supports designed to help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities acquire, maintain, and improve the skills necessary to live independently in their own homes or apartments. Instead of providing direct care, our ILS program focuses on teaching and coaching individuals to manage their daily lives, make informed choices, and participate fully in their communities.

Who Qualifies for Independent Living Services?

Independent Living Services are typically available to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are clients of a California Regional Center. Eligibility is determined through an assessment process conducted by the Regional Center, which evaluates an individual’s needs, goals, and ability to benefit from ILS training. The primary goal is to support individuals in achieving or maintaining independent living in the least restrictive environment possible.

Key Program Focus & What We Offer

Our ILS program is built on a foundation of personalized support, tailored to each individual’s unique needs and goals.

We believe that employment is a cornerstone of independence and self-sufficiency.
  • Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Model: For our employment services, we utilize the evidence-based Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model. This approach focuses on rapid job search, competitive employment, and ongoing support for both the individual and employer.
  • UC Davis Partnership: To ensure the highest quality of employment support, our team is receiving specialized training in the IPS model through a collaboration with UC Davis. This partnership enhances our ability to provide effective and integrated employment services.

How to Request Independent Living Services Through the Regional Center

If you or a loved one are an adult with an intellectual or developmental disability and believe that Independent Living Services would be beneficial, the first step is to contact your local Regional Center.
Here’s a general outline of the process:
  1. Contact Your Regional Center: Reach out to your assigned Service Coordinator at your local Regional Center. If you do not have a Service Coordinator or are new to the Regional Center system, they can guide you through the intake process.
  2. Discuss Your Needs: Inform your Service Coordinator that you are interested in Independent Living Services and explain your goals for increased independence.
  3. Assessment: The Regional Center will likely conduct an assessment to determine your specific needs, strengths, and the most appropriate services to support your independent living goals.
  4. Individual Program Plan (IPP): If ILS is determined to be an appropriate service, it will be included in your Individual Program Plan (IPP). The IPP outlines the services and supports you will receive.
  5. Service Provider Referral: Once ILS is approved in your IPP, the Regional Center will provide you with a list of vendored ILS providers, such as Milestones, from whom you can choose.
Milestones is a proud vendored provider of Independent Living Services through the Regional Centers. We are dedicated to building a supportive and inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
